Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the Boreal Ring, the free Boreal app, sizing, and what it does and does not do. For general wellness only, not a medical device.

What is the Boreal Ring?
The Boreal Ring is a smart ring for everyday wellness from Boreal Ring, a Canadian brand. You wear it day and night and it follows your sleep, heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV), stress, activity and skin-temperature trends, then shows them in the free Boreal app on your phone. It has no screen and no buttons.
Is Boreal Ring a Canadian company?
Yes. Boreal Ring is a Canadian brand, and the Boreal app is built and supported in Canada. The ring is made by a manufacturing partner.
What does the Boreal Ring track?
It tracks sleep stages, heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV), a daily stress score, blood-oxygen trends for general wellness, skin-temperature trends, steps and activity, and workouts. The app also includes guided breathing. All readings are for general wellness and personal reference.
Does the Boreal Ring need a subscription?
Every feature in the Boreal app is included, with no subscription. Optional extras may come later. We will share the details before launch.
How much does the Boreal Ring cost?
The founders pre-order price is $399 CAD, with a regular price of $479. Pre-order now to lock in the founders price; the first rings ship in about 6 to 8 weeks.
When will the Boreal Ring ship?
Pre-orders ship in about 6 to 8 weeks, after the first production run, so order now to get it before Christmas. You can cancel for a full refund any time before your ring enters production.
Is the Boreal Ring a medical device?
No. The Boreal Ring is a general wellness product. Its readings are for your own reference and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, prevent or monitor any disease or medical condition. If you feel unwell, talk to a health professional.
Does the Boreal Ring measure blood oxygen?
The Boreal Ring shows blood-oxygen awareness as a general wellness trend, mostly overnight, so you can see patterns over time. It is not a medical oximeter and is not a diagnosis; its readings should not be used to make health decisions or to check for any condition.
Can the Boreal Ring detect sleep apnea, AFib or high blood pressure?
No. The Boreal Ring does not detect, screen for or diagnose sleep apnea, atrial fibrillation, blood pressure or any other medical condition. If you have concerns about your sleep, heart or blood pressure, please see a health professional.
Does the Boreal Ring do ECG?
No. The Boreal Ring does not take an ECG.
How does the Boreal Ring track sleep?
The ring uses its sensors and movement to estimate when you fall asleep and wake up, and how your night splits into sleep stages. The app turns this into a nightly sleep summary and trends over weeks, so you can see what a good night looks like for you. Sleep stages from any consumer wearable are estimates, not a sleep study.
What is HRV, and why does the ring track it?
Heart-rate variability (HRV) is the small change in time between heartbeats. Many people use their overnight HRV, compared with their own usual range, as a general sign of how rested or strained they feel. The Boreal Ring tracks it as a personal trend; it is not a measure of heart health.
What is the Boreal stress score?
The stress score is a daily wellness indicator based on your heart rate and HRV during the day. It is meant to help you notice busy or tense stretches and take a break or a few slow breaths. It is not a measure of mental health or anxiety.
Does the Boreal Ring count steps and track workouts?
Yes. It counts steps and daily activity, and you can record workouts from the app to see heart rate and duration for each session.
Does the Boreal Ring measure body temperature?
It tracks changes in your skin temperature, mostly overnight, compared with your own usual range. It does not take your body temperature like a thermometer and cannot tell you whether you have a fever.
Does the Boreal Ring have guided breathing?
Yes. The Boreal app includes guided breathing sessions you can start any time, with the ring following your heart rate during the session.
How long does the battery last?
Battery life is not confirmed yet and will be shared before rings ship. The ring charges in its charging case with a USB-C cable.
Is the Boreal Ring waterproof? Can I shower or swim with it?
The water rating is not confirmed yet and will be shared before rings ship. The ring is built to be worn around the clock, including hand-washing. Until the rating is confirmed, please follow the care guide that comes with the ring.
What sizes does the Boreal Ring come in, and how do I find mine?
The Boreal Ring comes in several sizes, and every founding reservation includes a free sizing kit that ships first. Wear the try-on size for a day, tell us which fits, and your ring is built to that size. See the sizing page for more.
Which finger should I wear a smart ring on?
Most people wear it on the index or middle finger of their non-dominant hand, where the fit is snug but comfortable. Use the same finger for the sizing kit and the ring, because finger sizes differ.
Does the Boreal Ring work with iPhone and Android?
Yes. The Boreal app is being built for both iPhone and Android, and the ring connects to your phone over Bluetooth.
Does the Boreal Ring work with Apple Health, Google Health Connect or Samsung Health?
Health-platform connections such as Apple Health, Google Health Connect or Samsung Health are planned as the Boreal app grows, but they are not confirmed for launch.
What is the Boreal app?
The Boreal app is our own companion app, built for the Boreal Ring and currently in development. It shows your sleep, heart rate, HRV, stress, activity and temperature trends as simple daily summaries, and it is where you start workouts and guided breathing.
What happens to my data?
Your data is yours, and we do not sell it. Your wellness readings sync to your account so the app can show them to you, and you can ask for a copy of your data or ask us to delete it at any time.
Where does Boreal Ring ship?
Boreal Ring ships across Canada, and any shipping cost is shown at checkout before you pay.
What is the return policy?
You can return the Boreal Ring within 30 days of delivery for a refund of the ring price, as long as it is in good, resellable condition. Contact us to start a return, and the refund goes to your original payment method once we receive the ring.
What warranty does the Boreal Ring have?
The Boreal Ring has a 12-month limited warranty from the day you receive it, covering defects in materials and workmanship. It does not cover normal wear, accidental damage, loss or theft. This is in addition to your rights under consumer protection law.
Does the Boreal Ring track my menstrual cycle?
Cycle tracking is not confirmed for launch. If the Boreal app adds it later, it will be a wellness view only, and it must never be used for birth control or to plan or avoid pregnancy.
